Whitman Urges Approval of Clear Skies Bill as Senators Prepare Compromise Legislation
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Todd Whitman called on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee April 8 to favorably report legislation (S. 485) containing the Bush administration's plan to control power plant emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury. Testifying before the Senate Clean Air, Climate Change, and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee, Whitman said Bush's Clear Skies initiative would eliminate 35 million tons of air pollution that would be emitted under current law, and prevent 12,000 deaths annually by 2018.
